The final round of the PBA Southwest Region Dallas Open was held on Sunday, Oct. 21, and featured one of the best tournament fields you will ever find on the Regional Tour. The Dallas Open had so many top notch bowlers that it resembled a PBA Tour tournament more than a Regional Tour tournament. Some of the stars participating in the tournament were Mike Fagan, Mike Scroggins, Nathan Bohr, Dino Castillo, Shannon O'Keefe, Mike Edwards and Chris Barnes. The PBA greats dominated the top of the standings, as you would expect in a tournament like this, but it was ultimately Chris Barnes walking away with the title.
All 79 entrants started the tournament off with 12 games of qualifying to determine the 16 bowlers that would advance to the match play round. Chris Barnes dominated the qualifying round by averaging 237, which allowed him to get off to a 199 pin lead. The top 16 qualifiers then bowled 16 games of match play to determine the final standings of the tournament. Barnes would not be able to maintain the 237 average, but he still bowled well enough to win the tournament by 264 pins over his nearest competitor. PBA Tour stars Dino Castillo, Mike Fagan and Mike Scroggins would all finish in the top five.
Chris Barnes does not usually bowl on the PBA Regional Tour, but this is the usual outcome when he does. Barnes has spent quiet some time bowling overseas during the off-season, and he looks poised to become the best bowler on the PBA Tour again. Barnes won tournaments in Cyprus and Austria and finished in second place at a tournament in Thailand over the past few months. Barnes has faced the best bowlers in the world in these tournaments, and nobody has been able to match his performance. I think it is safe to say that Chris Barnes is the best bowler in the world right now, and I would be shocked if he does not seriously contend for the PBA Player of the Year award in the upcoming PBA Tour season.
Jake has been an avid bowler since the age of 8, and regularly follows the PBA throughout the year.
