After blowing a two-goal lead in stunning fashion the last time out, the Portland Timbers have their longest winless streak to start a season.
The Timbers, though, also own an 18-game unbeaten run at home in the regular season and will try to add to that Saturday night against Chivas USA, which hasn't earned a road win in more than a year.
With six minutes to go before stoppage time, Portland was poised to capture its first win of 2014 last Saturday. Instead, the Timbers (0-2-3) allowed Seattle star Clint Dempsey to score two goals and complete a hat trick in a 4-all tie.
Dempsey tallied the tying score on a penalty kick in the 87th minute.
"We got another point, that's the positive and we've got to remember that and remind yourself that we didn't lose," coach Caleb Porter said. "But you can't be satisfied being up 4-2 and giving away two points late in the game."
Portland had scored three goals in its first four games. On his 28th birthday, midfielder Diego Chara scored twice to end a 73-game goal drought dating to Sept. 17, 2011.
The Timbers are 11-0-7 in their last 18 at home.
"The offense was clicking today. It's been coming along the last couple of games and today, fortunately enough, it did come along," Chara said through a translator. "The offense was good, but I'm also a defensive player so I'm also thinking of the defensive lapses and how we can correct those."
The Timbers might have a chance for a better defensive showing against a Chivas team that's scored three goals during an 0-2-2 stretch. Chivas (1-2-2) lost 3-0 to stadium rival Los Angeles on Sunday.
"Psychologically, you're left hurt. We've got to try to lift ourselves and see what comes ahead," forward Erick Torres said. "We don't have a choice but to close our mouths and work hard."
Torres had his four-game goal streak to start the season snapped, leaving him one shy of Brian McBride's MLS-record run to open 1998.
He's scored Chivas' two goals in its two road games this season. The club is 0-13-4 away from home since a 4-1 win over Chicago on March 24, 2013.
Among those 13 losses was a 3-0 defeat to Portland on May 12. Rodney Wallace had a goal and an assist in that game but hasn't seen any action this season.
Wallace also had a goal and Diego Valeri scored a pair in a 5-0 road victory over Chivas on Oct. 26. Valeri had four of his team's nine goals in last season's series and assisted on three others as Portland went 2-0-1.
