Chivas USA and the San Jose Earthquakes drew 2-2 in the Home Depot Center on Saturday.
Injuries and suspension took their toll on Chivas USA, with Jose Luis Sanchez Sola only naming five substitutes to back up a reserve lineup.
In a scrappy game, San Jose staked a lead a few minutes before half. Shea Salinas took a free kick from the left wing and no one challenged Chris Wondolowsi at the far post. Wondo easily tucked past an irate Dan Kennedy, who chased the referee to argue that Wondolowski was offside.
Directly after the half, the Goats equalized. Jorge Villafaña drilled a hard cross into the box. Jon Busch tried to clear, but only succeeded in punching the ball straight off Mario de Luna and back into his own net.
Chivas USA quickly scored another. Yet again Villafaña provided the cross, this time pulling the ball back into the box from the end line. It trickled through to Tristan Bowen, who wound up and cranked the ball back across the sprawling Busch.
Chivas USA held the lead stoutly, blocking seven 'Quakes shots. But San Jose made the breakthrough with 15 minutes remaining through substitute Cardell Cato. Salinas raced to the end line and crossed. Cato came streaming into the area and one-timed a sharp, low shot past Dan Kennedy.
