The Seattle Sounders coasted to a 2-0 win over Chivas USA on Saturday night.
Academy director of soccer Sacha van der Most sat on the Chivas USA bench. Jose Luis 'Chelis' Sanchez Sola was fired midweek after earning one point in seven games, and replacement coach Jose Luis Real is still serving in his role as sporting development director at Chivas de Guadalajara ahead of the Liga MX draft on June 5, leaving van der Most to step in temporarily.
His debut did not go well.
Twenty minutes into the match, Mario Martinez and Lamar Neagle passed quickly to free Obafemi Martins. The Nigerian striker scooped the ball over the onrushing Dan Kennedy to open the scoring.
A minute prior to the goal, Osvaldo Alonso, who strained his groin two weeks earlier, went off with an injured thigh. Andy Rose replaced him.
After the half hour mark, the ball beat Kennedy again. Mario Rosales curled a cross into the box. Under no opposition pressure, Mario de Luna headed the ball into his own net.
With the game winding to a close, Martins dragged his foot over Gabriel Farfan in front of referee Ricardo Salazar, who issued a red card.
Just as the Goats are between coaches, the stadium is between names. Though a partnership with StubHub began Saturday, the official unveiling as the SubHub Center won't be until June 19, when the LA Galaxy host the Portland Timbers. So the 9,053 in attendance technically entered the Home Depot Center, despite the replaced signs above the turnstiles.
