ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) -- Chips All In edged Boat Trip by a nose to win the $100,000 Eddie D. Stakes on opening day of Santa Anita's meet.
Ridden by Julien Leparoux, Chips All In ran 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course in 1:12 and paid $7.80, $4.80 and $3.
Boat Trip returned $7.40 and $4.60 at 7-1 odds. Defending champion Unbridled's Note was another half-length back in third and paid $3.40 to show as the 5-2 favorite. Caracortado, who hadn't raced since January 2012, finished fourth.
Chips All In isn't nominated to the $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita on Nov. 2, so his owners would have to pay $100,000 to supplement him.
''You never know,'' trainer Jeff Mullins said.
Leparoux was intent on letting Chips All In take the lead.
''I just tried to be clear and not have any traffic,'' he said. ''I put him where he was clear and he put me there easy. I thought I felt someone coming on the outside, and he went on. He loves this track and loves this distance.''
The victory, worth $60,000, increased Chips All In's career earnings to $410,613, with seven wins in 16 starts.
