Chiefs to retain Buccaneers GM candidate Ballard

The SportsXchange

Kansas City Chiefs personnel director Chris Ballard is not joining good friend Lovie Smith as general manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Ballard, according to Sirius XM NFL host Adam Caplan, was blocked from accepting the job by the Chiefs because the position did not include increased responsibility. Ballard would not have held final say in personnel decisions with the Buccaneers. However, NFL Network's Albert Breer said it was Ballard's call not to interview.

Smith and Ballard worked together with the Chicago Bears.

New York Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross was given permission to interview with the Buccaneers, who requested an interview Wednesday.

Lional Vital, director of player personnel with the Atlanta Falcons, is the other known candidate.

General manager Mark Dominik spent 19 seasons with the franchise in scouting and personnel before he was fired along with head coach Greg Schiano at the end of the 2013 season.

Smith was introduced as head coach this week. He signed a five-year deal and will again be in the position of working for a general manager that did not hire the head coach. Phil Emery was named Chicago Bears GM, replacing Jerry Angelo, and fired Smith after a 10-6 season in 2012.
