Chiefs release Cassel

Quarterback Matt Cassel's time in Kansas City officially ended Thursday, when he was released by the Chiefs.

The move was widely expected after the Chiefs traded a second-round pick, 34th overall, and a conditional 2014 pick for Alex Smith and signed backup Chase Daniel.

Cassel started 47 games in four years after being acquired from the New England Patriots. He had good stretches, but totaled 59 touchdowns and 44 interceptions. He helped the team to the AFC West title in 2010.
