Chiefs, Dolphins resume trade talks

The SportsXchange

Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said Friday that trade talks with the Miami Dolphins involving franchise-tagged left tackle Branden Albert were on again.

Left to resolve are matters of compensation. Albert is guaranteed $9.8 million in 2013 due to the franchise designation applied by the Chiefs and wants a new contract if he's dealt.

To get him from the Chiefs, the Dolphins would have to part with multiple draft picks or a veteran. Kansas City wanted the 42nd overall pick in return for Albert, but Miami used that pick to trade up in the first round Thursday from No. 12 to the third spot. The Dolphins drafted Oregon defensive end Dion Jordan.

The Dolphins still own the 54th overall pick, a selection received in their 2012 trade with the Colts that sent cornerback Vontae Davis to Indianapolis.

The two sides discussed a deal most of the week, but Dolphins' general manager Jeff Ireland classified the status of negotiations as going "nowhere" late Thursday night.

The Chiefs drafted a left tackle of the future in Eric Fisher with the first overall pick. Albert, who played guard and tackle at Virginia, prefers not to play right tackle.

Kansas City is without a second-round pick, having dealt the 34th overall pick to the San Francisco 49ers for quarterback Alex Smith in March.
