Arguably no team in the league has gotten a better head start on free agency than the Chiefs.
Andy Reid's new regime continued its spending spree Friday, signing former Falcons CB Dunta Robinson to a three-year deal, as first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Released in a cost-cutting move by Atlanta last week, Robinson, 30, joins a unit that finished 12th in pass defense in 2012, yet tallied just seven INTs, tied for the league low. This is the third professional stop for the Texans' 2004 first-rounder. Robinson inked a six-year, $54 million deal with the Falcons in 2010, but he failed to provide the type of playmaking presence Atlanta envisioned, picking off just four passes in three seasons.
The Robinson signing is the latest in a flurry of moves over the past two weeks.
Reid quickly identified his man under center, acquiring Alex Smith in a trade with the Niners last week. The club then turned its attention to Smith's two greatest assets, giving No. 1 WR Dwayne Bowe one of the richest wide receiver contracts in the league and designating OLT Branden Albert as its franchise player. Pro Bowl P Dustin Colquitt also received a new three-year deal.
The way we see it
Robinson was somewhat of a disappointment in Atlanta, but he will bring a swagger to the Kansas City defense under new coordinator Bob Sutton. A fearless run defender and versatile coverman, Robinson should give Sutton more flexibility in a secondary that features CB Brandon Flowers and SS Eric Berry.
Reid's stamp is already on the Chiefs, but expect the club to remain big players this offseason. In addition to likely continuing to dip their toe in the free-agent waters beginning Tuesday, the Chiefs are armed with the first pick in April's draft. Because Reid's new regime has gotten so much accomplished already, it should be in position to focus on taking the best player regardless of position when Roger Goodell heads to the podium to kick off the 2013 NFL draft late next month.
