Mexican national team star Javier Hernandez netted for Manchester United as the Red Devils were dispatched 5-4 by Chelsea, which took revenge for its controversial Premier League four days earlier. The result knocks Man U out of the Capital One Cup, while Chelsea moves on to the quarterfinals.
Chicharito scored in the 43rd minute to make the game 2-0 after Ryan Giggs' opener. Chelsea drew level through a David Luiz penalty and a Gary Cahill header, but Nani restored United's lead before the hour mark. United thought they had done enough to go through to the Capital One Cup quarterfinals, but a second Chelsea penalty was converted by Eden Hazard after Ramires was taken down in the box to force extra time.
Daniel Sturridge rounded Anders Lindegaard in the 97th minute to give Chelsea the lead. Ramires scored an insurance goal in the 116th minute, which turned out to be vital as Ryan Giggs converted a spot kick, the game's third, to bring his side within one, but there wasn't enough time to complete the comeback, and Chelsea emerged as the victor.
The goal continues a prolific spell for Chicharito, who scored twice in United's Champions League victory against Braga last week, and also netted the winner against the Blues at the weekend.
