Earlier today the Chicago Bears terminated the contract of seven year pro Craig Steltz. That weeping sound you hear is resident LSU fan Dane Noble.

This off season the Chicago Bears added veteran safeties M.D. Jennings, Ryan Mundy, Danny McCray and Adrian Wilson and they also drafted safety Brock Vereen. Wilson was cut a couple days ago, but they still have a lot of bodies at the safety position, which contributed to them parting ways with Craig Steltz. Also a contributing factor was the nagging injury that plagued Steltz all off season.

He just wasn't able to get on the field enough to distance himself from the other safeties battling for a roster spot, although he did play on Friday against the Seahawks making a special teams tackle

With as bad as the special teams have looked this preseason, I thought Steltz had a legitimate chance to stick around as a 5th safety.

At this point you have to assume Mundy, McCray and Vereen are locks. The recently concussed Conte is probably a lock as well. M.D. Jennings played special teams last year for the Packers so he could be an option if the Bears keep five at the position.

Chicago's roster now stands at 77 active players. They must be down to 75 before 3:00pm central tomorrow.
