MLB trade deadline:

Chelsea's EPL Lead Down to One Point After Loss to Manchester United: A Fan's Take

Yahoo Contributor Network

Chelsea and Manchester United face each other for the first time in the English Premier League season on October, 28. Chelsea was one of two unbeaten teams in the league heading into the game, but only held a slim four point lead over both Manchester United and Manchester City. Chelsea would ultimately see their lead in the EPL fall to one point after a lack of discipline and poor refereeing cost them the game with Manchester United.

Several Chelsea players have shown a lack of discipline off of the field, and it finally made its way to the field. Chelsea was playing without one of the best defenders in the world, John Terry, and his omission was seen early in the game. Manchester United was able to build a 2-0 lead by the 12th minute. Chelsea was able to rebound and tie the game in the second half, but were then hurt by several key mistakes by the referee and their players. With the game tied at two, Branislav Ivanovic was sent off with a red card in the 63rd minute. Fernando Torres was then sent off five minutes later after receiving his second yellow card, in one of the worst calls I have ever seen. Down to only nine players, Chelsea had no way to stop Manchester United from scoring, and they ultimately took the lead in the 75th minute.

Most Chelsea fans are probably blaming the loss on the terrible call by the referee to send off Torres, but I do not buy that argument. I think it was the poor start to the game that cost Chelsea. They were playing too good defensively heading into this game to get down two goals so early in the game. Chelsea was the better team most of the game, and they would have had no problem winning if they would have started the game better. I also think that Manchester United would have eventually taken the lead after Ivanovic was sent off. I do not think that Chelsea would have been able to stop them with only 10 players, but they were certainly doomed when Torres was sent off. Chelsea needs to avoid the distractions off of the field and be more discipline on the field if they want to seriously contend with Manchester United and Manchester City for the English Premiere League title this year.
