Chelsea Maintains Great Scoring Pace Without Sacrificing Defense: A Fan's Take

Yahoo Contributor Network

Chelsea just completed their seventh game of the English Premiere League with a 4-1 victory over Norwich City. Chelsea now has six victories and one draw in their seven matches, and join Manchester City as the only undefeated teams in the Premiere League. Chelsea has been so successful in the early portions of the EPL season because they have found a way to score a lot of goals while maintaining the best defense in the league.

Goal differential is the best indicator of a soccer team's success, and Chelsea is currently leading the Premiere League with a +11 goal differential. Manchester City and Manchester United were able to dominate the goal differential stat last season, and that is why they were easily the two best teams in the league. Chelsea is currently second in the league with 15 goals scored and are also leading the league with only 4 goals allowed. Most soccer teams have to sacrifice quality play in the back to be able to score more goals, but Chelsea has found the perfect balance right now.

Chelsea is showing that they have no problem keeping their players back, but as soon as the other team makes a mistake they go on the attack. This great counterattack is one the reasons why I think that this Chelsea team is going to be at the top of the Premiere League standings for the entire season. This counterattacking style would not be as successful as it currently is without the resurgence of Fernando Torres. Torres finally looks like he has got his head right, and he is being used perfectly by Roberto Di Matteo. Chelsea spent a lot of money to bring Torres to the team and it finally looks like they are getting the great goal scorer that they paid for. It may only be seven games into the season, but all of the signs point to Chelsea returning to prominence due to their great defense and counterattacking offense.

Jake has had a love for soccer since he was a small child, and has been an avid Chelsea fan for the last 10 years.
