Chargers release DT Garay, TE McMichael

Tight end Randy McMichael and defensive tackle Antonio Garay were released by the Chargers.

McMichael was owed a roster bonus of $250,000 on Saturday. Cutting him Tuesday saved San Diego $1.5 million in cap space. Garay was due a $1.5 million roster bonus on Saturday but releasing him saved the Chargers $5.13 million.

McMichael, who caught nine passes last season, turns 34 in June. He entered the NFL in 2002 as a fourth-round pick of the Miami Dolphins. He joined the St. Louis Rams in 2007 and signed with the Chargers in 2010.

Garay, 33, was drafted in 2003 by the Browns and spent two seasons in Cleveland before two more unproductive years with the Bears. He proved to be a great fit in San Diego's 3-4 defense and had a Pro Bowl season in 2009, his first with the Chargers, posting 48 tackles and 5.5 sacks.
