Chargers sign PK Novak with Kaeding out

Place-kicker Nick Novak was signed by the San Diego Chargers with Nate Kaeding sidelined for Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs with a groin injury.

Kaeding has scored 27 points in the first three weeks of the season. He suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 1 of 2011 and was replaced by Novak. Kaeding then beat out Novak in a competition for the job in training camp this year.

Offensive lineman Reggie Wells was released by the Chargers for the second consecutive week.
