Chargers, Freeney agree to $8.75 million deal
The San Diego Chargers agreed to a two-year, $8.75 million contract with free agent defensive end Dwight Freeney, according to multiple reports on Saturday.
Freeney also reportedly has incentives in the contract tied to the number of sacks he gets that could make the deal worth up to $13.35 million.
Freeney, one of the most feared pass rushers of the last decade, was cut by the Indianapolis Colts during the winter after a slow 2012 season.
Freeney visited the Chargers during the week. He also drew interest from the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots, but those teams reportedly were not prepared to pay for his asking price.
The Chargers are in need of a pass rusher after losing second-year player Melvin Ingram to a torn ACL this week in practice and Shaun Phillips to free agency. However, they did sign free agent linebacker Thomas Keiser on a one-year contract.
Freeney was held to just 12 tackles and five sacks in 14 games last season. He missed two games with an ankle injury. However, he led the Colts with 34 quarterback hurries.
For his career, Freeney has 107.5 sacks in 10 years with the Colts.
