Chacin to start season on DL

The SportsXchange

Colorado Rockies right-hander Jhoulys Chacin will start the season on the 15-day disabled list because of a shoulder strain.

Chacin did not appear in a spring training game and only pitched in bullpen sessions. He will stay in Arizona to rehab while the team travels to Miami for its opening series against the Marlins.

Another starter, Tyler Chatwood, was schedule to be evaluated on Saturday after he injured his left hamstring while legging out a triple Friday night. The team initially said he had a slight strain and cramp.

In addition to Chacin, left-hander Boone Logan was also placed on the DL. Both moves are retroactive to March 21.

The club also optioned right-hander Jordan Lyles to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Manager Walt Weiss said Franklin Morales, who pitched on the 2007 club that played in the 2007 World Series, will join the rotation as the No. 5 starter.

Chacin, who the Rockies had hoped would be their Opening Day starter, went 14-10 with a 3.47 ERA last year.

The Rockies were expected to announce their Opening Day roster Saturday.
