CFB Roundup: Manziel to sit out first half of season opener

The SportsXchange

Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel will sit out the first half of Texas A&M's opener on Saturday against Rice as part of an agreement with the NCAA and the school in the investigation to determine whether the quarterback received money for signing autographs, according to reports.

The school has yet to announce the suspension that likely would bring an end to the NCAA's probe into potential rules violations by the redshirt sophomore quarterback. Investigators met with Manziel for nearly six hours on Sunday and he denied accepting payment from memorabilia dealers for his signatures.

The suspension could be for a secondary violation of a bylaw that prohibits use of a student-athlete's name or picture without knowledge or permission.

The Aggies are likely to start junior Matt Joeckel or freshman Kenny Hill at quarterback.

---Louisville defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin was released from a hospital on Wednesday after his moped was hit by a car on campus a day earlier.

Mauldin, a junior who started six games last season, was kept overnight for observation. The school said in a release that "tests and evaluations continue to be positive" and that he sustained no serious orthopedic injuries.

Mauldin could still play in the Cardinals' season opener on Sunday against Ohio University.

According to police, Mauldin was driving his moped Tuesday morning when a car making a turn hit Mauldin and drove away. Neither the car nor the driver has been found.

The 6-foot-4, 243-pounds Mauldin had 22 tackles and 4.5 sacks last season.
