CFB Roundup: Ex-Fresno State coach Sweeney dies; Texas has record earnings
Former Fresno State coach Jim Sweeney died, the school announced Friday night. He was 83. No further details were provided.
Sweeney coached the Bulldogs for 19 seasons and retired with a school-record 144 wins. The field at Bulldog Stadium was renamed in his honor. Overall, Sweeney had 200 victories over 32 seasons.
Sweeney also coached at Montana State and Washington State before coming to Fresno State in 1976. He retired after the 1996 season. He also was an assistant coach with the Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Cardinals.
---The University of Texas athletics department had a whopping $163.3 million in revenue and $138.3 million in operating expenses in 2011-12, according to USA Today. The report came from the school's latest annual financial report to the NCAA. It was submitted through an open-records request by USA Today and Indiana University's National Sports Journalism Center.
Included is Texas' $103.8 million in football revenue, the first time a college has reported at least $100 million in revenue from one sport.
The school's $25 million operating surplus for 2011-12 was more money than 135 of the estimated 220 Div. I public schools spent on their entire athletics programs in 2010-11. The operating surplus was up from 16.6 in 2010-11.
Donations increased from $37.3 million to $40.7 million made up for a $2 million decrease in ticket sales at Texas in 2011-12. Texas also had a more than $6 million increase in its conference and NCAA shares and a nearly $6 million increase in royalty, licensing, advertising and sponsorship revenue.
