Celtics land Williams

Shelden Williams(notes) has agreed in principle to a one-year contract with the Boston Celtics, league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Monday.

Williams, a 6-foot-9 forward, is expected to sign later this week for the veteran’s minimum.

After the Atlanta Hawks drafted Williams out of Duke with the eighth overall pick in 2006, his career has struggled to gain traction. The Celtics will be his fourth team in five years (Atlanta, Sacramento and Minnesota) For Williams’ career, he’s averaging fewer than five points and five rebounds a game.

Even so, Williams will give the Celtics some length and depth on their front line behind power forwards Kevin Garnett(notes) and Rasheed Wallace(notes).

The Celtics are still interested in re-signing restricted free agent forward Glen Davis despite the addition of Williams.

The Celtics are also trying to find a third team to work a sign-and-trade with the Indiana Pacers for Marquis Daniels. This way, the Celtics can preserve their $1.9 million biannual exception. If they’re unable to work a deal, Boston will sign Daniels with the exception.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have signed restricted free agent center Ryan Hollins to a three-year, $7 million offer sheet, a source said. The Dallas Mavericks are not expected to match the offer sheet, the source said, and Hollins is expected to be in Minneapolis next week for informal workouts with his new teammates. Hollins played sparingly for Dallas and Charlotte last season.
