CB Patrick Peterson, Cards reach five-year, $70M extension

Pro Bowler Patrick Peterson and the Arizona Cardinals reached agreement on a five-year, $70 million extension with $48 million guaranteed, the cornerback announced Tuesday night on his Twitter account.

The deal will make Peterson the highest paid cornerback in the league, topping the extensions signed recently by the Cleveland Browns' Joe Haden (five years, $68 million) and the Seattle Seahawks' Richard Sherman (four years, $56 million).

Peterson had two years left on his rookie contract before he and the Cardinals reached agreement Tuesday. The $48 million is guaranteed for injury. It's the highest guarantee for a cornerback in the history of the league.

He has 12 interceptions in three Pro Bowl seasons, seven in 2012. Peterson also returned four punts for scores in his rookie year.

After the deal was announced, Sherman, who has had a spirited back-and-forth with Peterson over who's the best cornerback in the league, had a curious retweet that read:

Peterson won't return kicks or line up as a wideout this season, he told the team's website on Sunday.
