CB Munnerlyn hoping to stay with Panthers

Cornerback could be one of the first places new Panthers GM Dave Gettleman looks as he begins to address the team’s salary-cap situation. Gettleman is going to have to trim about $12-15 million off the books just to make Carolina salary-cap compliant by the start of the new league year. With CB Chris Gamble due to have a cap number of $10.9 million in 2013, our sources are expecting Gamble, who will be 30 in March, to be cut.

If Gamble is released, it might not be the only change at cornerback for Carolina. Captain Munnerlyn, who started 11 games in 2012, is due to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Munnerlyn told PFW last week he was excited about the hiring of Gettleman, but he was not certain that he would be in the Panthers’ plans for 2013.

“You get a little nervous,” Munnerlyn said. “We don’t know really know the next GM.

“ … In my case, I don’t know if he likes my style of play at corner or nickel (back).”

Munnerlyn recorded a career-high 59 tackles and returned both of his interceptions for touchdowns in 2012. He called the season one of the best of his four-year career, and he’s hoping to get a chance to build on it in the same uniform next season.

“I want to be a Carolina Panther,” Munnerlyn said. “I know that. Whatever happens, happens. I have to be prepared for the worst.”
