CB Cason makes sense as priority for Chargers

The next GM of the Chargers will have a very busy next few months with several players up for new contracts, especially on defense, including starting corners Quentin Jammer and Antoine Cason. Jammer, who will be 34 in June, may have played his final game with San Diego after 11 seasons in which he missed only four contests. The Chargers will enter 2013 with a pair of third-year corners, Shareece Wright and Marcus Gilchrist, too. Assuming they don’t want to begin next season with that pair starting — and not much behind it in terms of depth — Cason could turn out to be a top priority this offseason, we hear.

The fifth-year pro has played in every game of his career and started all 16 games in 2012, totaling 73 tackles, 11 passes two defensed, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. One daily team observer pointed out that Cason “quietly” had a solid second half of the season. We hear Cason would like to stay in San Diego, and with many other free agents to deal with, the new regime may want to lock down Cason early so they can focus on other needs. At 26 and starting at a prime position, Cason likely has more appeal to the club than some of the other, older free agents, but he could have some suitors as well.
