Cavaliers sign D-League G Kennedy</Headline>
After losing out on Lester Hudson, the Cavaliers dipped into the D-League again to fill their roster spot. The Cavs signed G-F D.J. Kennedy from the Erie BayHawks for the remainder of the season.
In 44 regular-season games (all starts) for the BayHawks, Kennedy averaged 15.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.4 assists. The 6-foot-6, 215-pounder shot 44.7 percent from the field and 37.8 percent from 3-point range. The Cavs' roster is now at 15 players. Kennedy, 22, played four seasons at St. John's and topped the 1,000-point plateau.
The timing of the signing surprised Kennedy.
"You've just got to be ready for anything, especially when you're playing in the D-League," he said. "Anything can happen on any day."
Kennedy said he's versatile and can play point guard, shooting guard or small forward.
"I kind of do a little bit of everything: Pass, score, rebound, whatever the coaches need me to do."
Kennedy was signed for the rest of the year with an option on next year. He'll play for the Cavs' summer-league team in Las Vegas.
"I'm trying to finish strong these (four) games and do whatever the coaches ask me to do," he said. "(I want to) have a good summer and, hopefully, be here next year."
Cavs coach Byron Scott said he hasn't seen Kennedy play in a game. Their scouts have told him he's a long, very intelligent basketball player.
"They said he's a scorer, but not a shooter," he said. "He's a really good passer. He moves extremely well. He has good foot speed and good footwork, especially defensively."
The Cavs offered Hudson a contract for the rest of the season, but he declined and signed with Memphis.
