Casey Kelly: Facing Tommy John Surgery

Rotowire.com
Update: Kelly (elbow) is facing Tommy John surgery but will seek a second opinion before making a final decision, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Recommendation: Kelly, who was previously competing for a spot in the rotation, will return for the start of the 2014 season at the absolute earliest if he needs Tommy John surgery. He allowed a 6.21 ERA in six starts with the Padres last season but showed some promise with a 26:10 K/BB over 29 innings. Kelly missed three months of the 2012 season with elbow inflammation and was shut down right before the end of the season, possibly as a result of lingering soreness.
