Carpenter has shoulder surgery

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter had shoulder surgery on Thursday, and it is expected he will need two to three months to recover before he begins throwing.

The operation was performed to address thoracic outlet syndrome, which is a choking of the nerves as they pass from the shoulder into the arm

Carpenter, who is out for the season, will remain in Dallas for a few days as he immediately begins his rehabilitation, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Carpenter, 37, can begin throwing after the three-month recovery period, and it might be six months before he can pitch in a game.

Carpenter and the Cardinals are hoping he will be available to pitch by Spring Training.
