In a game where both teams struggled to get their offense going, the Panthers topped the 49ers, 10-9, in San Francisco.
Cam Newton didn't throw for a score and came away 16 of 32 for only 169 yards and one pick. On the 49ers side, Colin Kaepernick had an equally underwhelming day, going 11 of 22 with 91 yards passing, no touchdowns and one pick.
DeAngelo Williams ran for 46 yards on eight carries with a touchdown. Steve Smith caught six balls for 63 yards.
The Carolina defense was the major reason for the victory, limiting the 49ers to 91 yards passing and 105 rushing while forcing one interception. They terrorized Kaepernick and the 49ers offensive line with six sacks.
49ers running back Frank Gore had a big day with 82 yards rushing and 21 receiving.
The Panthers host the Patriots (7-2) next week while the 49ers head to New Orleans to face the Saints (6-2).
