Carmelo Anthony admits several people close to him have advised him to “shut it down” for the season as his New York Knicks fortunes continue to dwindle and his bothersome left knee shows little sign of getting better.

The veteran Anthony remains a game-time decision for the Knicks game in Chicago Thursday night, but he seemed in rare for in addressing reporters during the team’s early-morning shootaround.

“I have multiple people say kind of just shut it down,” he said. “Or just take time off. But at the end of the day, it’s hard for me to just do that right now in the midst of what’s happening with the team and this season. So just trying to be smart about that.”

Anthony told reporters his knee started bothering him even more than usual during the Knicks Tuesday night loss to Dallas. As a result, he said he did little during the team’s Wednesday afternoon workout, prompting those close to him to again advise him to consider shutting it down for the season.

“It gets frustrating,” he said. “Not knowing what’s going to happen kind of with your body. So for me it’s just taking it as the days come. Some days it feels like I can go, some days it feels like I have everything. The other day it was a little sore in the first half and I didn’t have no lift in my shot and in the second half the lift came back a little bit. It’s going to be off and on like that.”

Anthony’s injury troubles couldn’t come at a worse time for the already struggling Knicks (5-22). The Knicks will already be without veteran forward Amare Stoudemire (rest) and guards J.R. Smith (plantar fascia) and Iman Shumpert (shoulder)

After the Bulls, the Knicks schedule doesn’t get much less grueling, with the team playing six games before the New Year, including facing such powers as the Raptors, Wizards, Blazers and Clippers. It’s all enough to have many advising Anthony the time to shut down the season is now.
