Cards place RB Wells on IR; can return

Running back Beanie Wells was placed on injured reserve by the Arizona Cardinals, but with the designated to return label that could allow him to return to action by Nov. 25.

Wells, whose career has been marked by a string of injuries, suffered a severe turf toe against Philadelphia last Sunday. Second-year player Ryan Williams has taken over the feature role, and will be backed up by LaRod Stephens-Howling. William Powell figures to be active for the first time this season, and the Cardinals re-signed Alfonso Smith.

Wells has rushed for only 76 yards on 29 carries (2.9-yard average) this season. He has missed only five of 53 games since entering the season, but has played through a string of nagging injuries, including a troublesome knee in 2011.
