The St. Louis Cardinals placed right-hander Jake Westbrook on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with elbow inflammation. Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told KMOX Radio that John Gast will be called up from Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday to start a game against the New York Mets in Westbrook's place. To make room for Gast on the roster, the Cardinals will move injured closer Jason Motte, who is recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery, to the 60-day disabled list. The 35-year-old Westbrook received a cortisone shot on Sunday and plans to test his arm later in the week. In Westbrook's last outing on Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs, he gave up four runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. For the season, he is 2-1 with a 1.62 ERA in seven starts. The move to the DL is retroactive to Thursday. Gast, a 24-year-old left-hander, is 3-1 with a 1.16 ERA in seven starts for Memphis. He began the season with 32 consecutive scoreless innings.
