Cardinals' sinking feeling grows with Sendlein out for year

Just what the Cardinals needed: Another crushing blow to their offensive line.

Struggling much of the season without starting OLT Levi Brown, who suffered a season-ending triceps injury in mid-August, Russ Grimm’s beleaguered line was thrown another curve with the news the day after the Cardinals’ seventh consecutive loss that starting center and team captain Lyle Sendlein had suffered a torn ACL that — much to Sendlein’s reported dismay — will require season-ending surgery.

“It’s a huge loss,” one team insider said. “Lyle is a good, steady player who made a lot of line calls. He was probably their best lineman. His presence had been especially important with a rookie (Ryan Lindley) under center. The guy’s incredibly tough. He suffered the knee injury in the first quarter (of the loss to the Rams) and kept on playing the rest of the game. Back in 2008, he took some heat for not playing real well, but then it came out that he played almost the whole season with a really hurt shoulder.”

With Sendlein sidelined, the onus apparently falls on fourth-year pro Rich Ohrnberger, who started two games at guard earlier this season, to fill the huge void at center.

“It’s a significant downgrade,” the insider said.

It’s possible that Scott Wedige, who was signed Nov. 27 off the Bengals' practice squad, could get a shot at the center spot down the road. Wedige spent the preseason with the Cardinals, but he was released Aug. 31 and signed with the Giants' practice squad until he was released on Sept. 17.

“They liked him in the preseason,” the insider said of Wedige. “But it’s pretty doubtful they would start him right away.”
