Cardinals release S Wilson

Safety Adrian Wilson was released by the Arizona Cardinals on Friday after 12 seasons.

Wilson, 33, became a five-time Pro Bowler in Arizona as a hybrid linebacker-safety and is one of only six players in NFL history to record 25 sacks and 25 interceptions.

He started 162 games in his career, but the hard-hitting defensive back showed signs of slowing down in the past two seasons. In 2012, he often was replaced in obvious passing situations.

Releasing Wilson saves the Cardinals $3 million against the 2013 salary cap.

Wilson plans to continue playing and is available to sign before players who will not become unrestricted free agents until Tuesday.
