Cardinals put John Abraham on IR for concussions

Looks like John Abraham's career with the Cardinals -- and maybe his career as a whole -- could be coming to a close.

Arizona placed the linebacker on injured reserve Friday afternoon due to concussions.

Previously, the Cardinals announced Abraham was taking time off from the team and game after he texted Bruce Arians to say his "heart isn't in the game anymore."

But Abraham came back to the team and appeared prepared to try and play out the season.

Instead, he's being shut down because of excessive concussions.

From a football perspective, it's a big blow for the Cards. Without Abraham -- Darnell Dockett (several injuries) and Daryl Washington (suspension) as well on the defensive end of things -- Arizona could struggle to generate a pass rush.

They've done a good job making up for losses thus far, though, so don't count them out just yet.

For Abraham, personally, it's the smart move. If he's struggling off the field with his health, time off from the game is only a good thing.

Abraham, 36, is in the final year of his contract with the Cardinals.
