Canucks GM "sticking to" high return price for Luongo

The SportsXchange

Maligned Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo said Saturday he's ready to go if general manager Mike Gillis still wants to part with the 33-year-old.

As training camp opened Sunday, Gillis said the team isn't rushing into trade discussions but has fielded multiple offers. As of Sunday, Gillis said Luongo would be part of the Canucks unless trade offers improve.

"We're at a point with this team where we want specific types of players coming back to us that can help us today and down the road," Gillis told the Vancouver Sun. "I think that's a reasonable request so we're going to stick to it."

Luongo has 10 years, $47.3 million remaining on his current contract. The Canucks don't believe that commitment is a hindrance to executing a trade, but it appears some suitors might and could call Gillis' bluff. One new CBA provision that punishes a team when players retire before their contracts expire.

Gillis, though, said he's not concerned the market will dry up soon.

"Not one bit," he said. "I think there are going to be multiple opportunities to do something with Roberto -- if we choose to do it."
