Canucks' Edler agrees to 6-year, $30 million extension

Defenseman Alex Edler has agreed to a six-year contract extension with the Vancouver Canucks, the team announced.

The deal is worth $30 million, according to ESPN's Pierre LeBrun.

Edler, 26, had career highs in goals (11) and assists (38) last season.

He was entering the final year of his current contract and would have become an unrestricted free agent this summer if he hadn't agreed to an extension.

Edler, who is from Sweden, will carry a $5 million cap hit beginning next season.
