Junior center Jordan Heath recorded his second double-double of the season, leading Canisius to a 91-79 victory over Loyola (Maryland) on Thursday at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.
Heath posted 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots as Canisius (14-8, 7-4 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) withstood a late rally to win for the fourth time in five games. All five starters scored in double figures for the Golden Griffins, who are now tied with Loyola (15-8, 7-4) for third in the MAAC.
Senior guard Robert Olson had 27 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Greyhounds, who have lost consecutive games for the first time since late December.
Canisius led 18-6 after senior guard Isaac Sosa made two 3-pointers to fuel a 14-2 run in the opening half. The Golden Griffins stretched their lead to 15 before the Greyhounds battled back. Olson scored nine consecutive points to fuel a 15-4 run, but the Golden Griffins answered with an 11-0 run and led 43-31 at the break.
Canisius opened a 21-point lead midway through the second half. Loyola cut the lead to five with 3:39 to go, but the Golden Griffins pulled away once more.
Sosa finished with 19 points, while Billy Baron added 16, Harold Washington had 13 and Chris Manhertz scored 11 for Canisius.
Dylon Cormier and Erik Ethlerly scored 13 points apiece for Loyola.
