Canada, USA women to square off in June

On Tuesday, the Canadian Soccer Association announced that Canada’s women’s national team will play the United States at BMO Field in Toronto on June 2.

That will be Canada’s first match of 2013, and the first time the sides will meet since the controversial semifinal match at the London 2012 Olympic Football tournament.

In that match, the Americans hit an extra-time winner despite the fact Christine Sinclair had put Canada in front on three separate occasions.

“This will be the biggest game of the year for many of our players. It’s our biggest game since the Oympics,” said Canada head coach John Herdman.

“It’s a real coup for us to have USA coming to play on Canadian soil. It will be a special occasion.”

Historically, Canada has struggled against the United States, with a record of 3W-5D-44L in 52 International ‘A’ matches against the USA since 1986, with its last win coming in 2001 with a 3-1 victory at the Algarve Cup in Portugal.
