Campbell contending for role in Titans' secondary

National Football Post

As a former airport janitor who was fortunate enough to get a second chance after throwing his football career away, it's not surprising that Tommie Campbell is working to make the most of the opportunity he has been given.

Campbell, Tennessee's seventh-round pick a year ago, has himself squarely in the mix to be part of the Titans nickel package at cornerback this season, helping to offset the loss of Cortland Finnegan in free agency.

With no off-season last year, Campbell is taking the time this year to be dedicated to his film study and work in the weight room. It is something he has built on from his rookie season a year ago.

“Toward the middle of last year, that’s how I started approaching things,” Campbell told TitanInsider.com “That’s when I learned how to become a professional and to develop every day. When I was working at the airport, it was eight hours every day, so it’s possible for me to come over here for at least five (hours).”

Campbell and Chris Hawkins are battling for the third cornerback spot with Alterraun Verner shifting from outside to the slot in the Titans' nickel package. Their work so far has Coach Mike Munchak confident that not bringing in a veteran for Finnegan was maybe the right move for the Titans.

“That’s the fun part. Everyone gets worried about when we lost Finnegan and we have to go get a veteran. But a lot of times we feel comfortable with the guys we have,” Munchak said. “We like the guys we have. We like the speed we have, and he’s a perfect example of a guy who has so much upside. The question is how quickly can we get it out of him.”
