A week after the Nevada State Athletic Commission voted unanimously to ban applications for therapeutic use exemptions for testosterone replacement therapy, the California State Athletic Commission has issued its support.

CSAC Executive Director Andy Foster on Thursday issued a statement explaining that the California commission is in the process of altering its rules to meet the standards of the World Anti-Doping Agency for anyone that wants a TUE for TRT, which is a much more stringent standard than what has typically been applied in the MMA.

Until the process is complete, TRT is under a “total ban” in California.

“The California State Athletic Commission fully supports the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s decision to eliminate Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUE) for Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) in boxing and mixed martial arts,” read Foster’s statement.

“California is a strong supporter of anti-doping efforts. As part of California’s anti-doping efforts, the Commission recently began the rulemaking process to require meeting World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) standards as the only way to obtain a TUE for TRT. This standard is so high that it is an effective ban except under the most extreme circumstances.

“Until the rulemaking process is complete and the regulations are fully adopted, the Commission has a total ban on TRT. California remains committed to protecting the health and safety of athletes and having strict anti-doping standards is one of the ways this is accomplished.”

California is just the latest to follow Nevada. Almost as soon as Nevada made its decision to ban applications for TRT exemptions, the Ultimate Fighting Champion put its support behind the measure, and then the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission followed suit shortly thereafter.
