14-year veteran C Saturday to retire

The Packers have agreed to a deal with free-agent C Jeff Saturday. Terms of the contract were not announced.

Saturday replaces Scott Wells, who signed last week with the Rams. Saturday, who turns 37 in June, is a five-time Pro Bowler who has started 188 career games in 13 seasons with the Colts.

There were reports that Saturday would sign with the Broncos, where his close friend and former teammate Peyton Manning is now playing. However, Saturday opted for Green Bay, where he will play with another All-Pro quarterback in Aaron Rodgers.

The way we see it

Although he would appear to be a bit of a downgrade at this stage of his career from Wells, who is five years younger and is coming off a Pro Bowl berth, Saturday is a proven commodity who figures to click right away with Rodgers. It also seems that Saturday opted to join a team with a better chance of succeeding in a big way over being reunited with Manning, his longtime compadre both on and off the gridiron battlefield who isn't a lock to automatically turn the Broncos into a big-time playoff threat.

Like Wells, Saturday is considered extremely cerebral and should have no problem adapting to a pass-oriented offense not all that different from the one in Indy with Manning under center. Saturday also quickly figures to earn rave reviews in the locker room and add valuable guidance for the Packers' younger offensive linemen such as T.J. Lang, Marshall Newhouse and Bryan Bulaga.
