COMMENTARY | The Buffalo Sabres posted pictures on Tuesday, September 10 on their official Facebook page that showed forward Steve Ott and goaltenders Ryan Miller and Jhonas Enroth on the ice at First Niagara Center for a photo shoot for the upcoming 2013 season.
While any other time this wouldn't even be considered news, the fact that Ryan Miller has been the subject of trade rumors for the better part of the last year made this something to take about. And it had to do with the color of his equipment during the shoot.
As you see in the photos on the page, Miller is sporting, aside from his mask, all white goaltending equipment.
Naturally, fans on Twitter began speculating that this means Miller must definitely want, and is expecting, a trade out of Buffalo. I mean, why else would he have all white pads? He wants to make sure they match the uniform of whatever team he gets traded to. It's obvious, right?
Not quite. Why doesn't everyone just take a deep breath and consider a few things before jumping to the "ready to be traded" conclusion.
People have to remember, the NHL's competition committee passed new ruling this offseason calling for smaller goaltending equipment league wide. It could very well be possible that Miller just received the equipment he was wearing, and is still waiting to get them painted for the regular season. Did it every cross your mind once that maybe Miller just hadn't received his new painted pads for this season just yet, and the set he's wearing is a temporary set.
Or maybe, just maybe, Miller wants to have a classic look with the white padding. I mean, he's not the only goaltender to ever go with a plain, single-colored design.
Many, including myself, didn't expect Miller to be here when this time of year rolled around. But the fact of the matter is that he is still a member of the Buffalo Sabres for now, and will likely be for the foreseeable future.
