Buffalo Bills potential first round draft picks

Despite ending the season much sooner than anyone would have wanted, it is now time to turn our attention to most fans second most favorite time of year. The NFL Draft. For the Buffalo Bills, this will also be the first big strikes for Sean McDermott as he begins his tenure as the head coach in Buffalo.

In need of help on both sides of the football, the Buffalo Bills first round draft pick could be anyone’s guess at the moment. Will it be a quarterback? A wide receiver? How about a cornerback or a defensive lineman? At this point, you could almost throw a dart and hit a positional group the Bills need help at.

With the Draft now three and a half months away, I know it may be a little early to be looking towards the draft. But with the college football season now over, all that remains in the evaluation process is the combine and senior bowl for certain players. After that, individual workouts and before you know it, draft day. So without further ado, we present Week two of the “Buffalo Bills potential first round draft picks.”

3. Solomon Thomas — Defensive End — Stanford

Rising up the charts since he declared for the NFL Draft, Solomon Thomas is one of those players that already has the look of an NFL pass rusher. Playing defensive end, Thomas has almost all the intangibles wanted in a player. A never ending motor, extremely disruptive and explosive simply sums up Thomas as a potential NFL player.

Recording eight sacks this past season with the Cardinals, Thomas also displayed a knack for stopping running backs in the backfield. Recording 15 tackles for loss, Thomas is explosive when jumping the gap. He has the every down ability many look for in a defensive end.

While some may say that Thomas is a more natural 3-4 outside linebacker, I firmly believe that his ability to both stop the run and rush the passer make him qualified as a 4-3 defensive end. With the Buffalo Bills moving to this very scheme next season, Thomas could be the Bills first choice to play opposite Shaq Lawson for years to come.

2. Jamal Adams — Safety — LSU

Thanks to the possibility of Aaron Williams returning next season, Adams falls one spot in this week’s list. However, even with Williams possible to return, the team will need to find long term options at both strong and free safety in the near future. If the Bills choose to go need over talent, Adams could be the pick for the Buffalo Bills.

One of the biggest issues at this stage which played a small part in Adams’ demotion to number two is his draft stock. Projected as a top ten pick, it is becoming more possible by the day that Adams is the first safety taken off the board. If that is the case, he will not be taken by the Buffalo Bills.

Still a likely favorite for the Buffalo Bills front office, expect to see Adams pole vault back and forth between number one and two for the extent of this series.

1. Patrick Mahomes — Quarterback — Texas Tech

Rising all the way from number three to number one, Patrick Mahomes appears to be the hot prospect out there right now. Depending on the direction of the Buffalo Bills offense next season, the team may or may not move on from Tyrod Taylor. That said, the team still needs a long term replacement.

While some may be pushing for Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson — someone I feel is a second or third round pick — a player I really adore is Patrick Mahomes. A gunslinger in every sense of the word, Mahomes would bring a new perspective to the Buffalo Bills offense.

Using the run game to help in Mahomes development, adding the former Red Raider would open deep play avenues not seen under Tyrod. If a passing game is the way towards the playoffs, Mahomes is the guy needed in Buffalo.
