Bucs sign Wright, Hawkins

The SportsXchange

Safety Major Wright and wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Wright was drafted by new Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith and was an unrestricted free agent who started 31 games the past two seasons with the Chicago Bears. Wright will serve primarily in a backup role and play special teams. Dashon Goldson, signed to a five-year, $40 million contract in free agency in March 2013, and former first-round pick Mark Barron return as starters in Tampa.

Hawkins isn't on the same level talent-wise with Mike Williams, who was traded to the Buffalo Bills last week, but restores the depth chart numbers with a chance to make the team as a fourth or fifth wide receiver depending how general manager Jason Licht spends his draft choices.

Hawkins and Louis Murphy signed as free agents with leading receiver Vincent Jackson standing high above the rest on the current depth chart.
