Buchholz rehab assignment on hold

Boston Red Sox ace Clay Buchholz was unable to throw a bullpen session on Saturday, delaying a rehab assignment in the minor leagues that was expected to begin Tuesday.

Buchholz has been out since June 8 with a strained neck and continues to experience discomfort. He was able to throw on flat ground Saturday but not from a mound after he felt tightness in his trapezius muscle, according to the Boston Herald.

"Basically what we're doing is going as tolerated with throwing," Boston manager John Farrell said. "It's likely that, at some point, we're probably going to have to get him out on a rehab assignment, at least one start for now. But there's no timeframe for that. We've got to get him on the mound first and build first."

Before the neck problem surfaced during a June 8 game against the Angels, the 28-year-old right-hander was having a dominant season with a 9-0 record and a major league-best 1.71 ERA in 12 starts.
