Bryant wins Golden Spikes Award

Chicago Cubs first-round draft pick Kris Bryant won the Golden Spikes Award, USA Baseball announced Friday.

The award is given each year to the top amateur baseball player in the country.

Bryant batted .329 with a .493 on-base percentage, 31 home runs, 62 RBI and 80 runs scored for the University of San Diego this year. He led the nation in home runs, runs, walks, total bases and slugging percentage, and was a consensus first-team All-America selection.

Bryant is the first infielder to win the Golden Spikes Award since Nebraska's Alex Gordon in 2005. Bryant is also the first player in the history of the West Coast Conference to win the Golden Spikes Award.

The third baseman also won the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Year, the Baseball America Player of the Year and the Dick Howser Trophy.

He signed a $6.7 million contract with the Cubs, who took him No. 2 overall in the June draft.

The 21-year-old is set to join the Cubs' Class-A Short Season team in Boise soon.
