Bruins seek reinstatement for Muhammad

The SportsXchange

UCLA will have its appeal to have freshman Shabazz Muhammad reinstated heard on Friday, according to multiple reports.

Coach Ben Howland told reporters that the school filed motion with the NCAA Wednesday. He hopes to hear a decision soon after the hearing.

"At this time, I'm optimistic and hopeful that everything is going to work out," Howland told reporters. "That's about all I can say. Hopeful is a big part of that."

The NCAA declared Muhammad ineligible for competition after concluding that he had received travel and lodging expenses for unofficial visits during the recruiting period. If the Bruins' appeal is successful, Muhammad would likely be reinstated immediately. If it's denied, the school would have to request formal reinstatement.

At that point, Muhammad would likely be punished if and when he's reinstated. He could be suspended and forced to repay the benefits he received.

The Bruins won their first two games without Muhammad.
