Bruins' Eriksson sidelined indefinitely

The SportsXchange

Boston Bruins forward Loui Eriksson is out indefinitely with a concussion that resulted from a shot to the head by Buffalo Sabres left winger John Scott on Wednesday night in Buffalo, N.Y.

Eriksson left the ice with assistance at 5:46 of the third period and did not return to the game. He stayed overnight in a Buffalo hospital for observation.

"Loui traveled back to Boston from Buffalo by plane (Thursday) with a member of the Bruins' medical staff," Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said in a statement. "After an examination by team doctors in Boston, he has been diagnosed with a concussion and will be out indefinitely. The team will provide a further update on Loui's status when appropriate."

The 28-year-old Eriksson is in his first season with the Bruins after he was acquired in a trade with the Dallas Stars during the summer for Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverley. He has two goals and an assist in eight games this season.

The NHL suspended Scott indefinitely while he awaits an in-person hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety.

The 31-year-old Scott said he apologized to Eriksson in a text on Wednesday night and told reporters after the game that he was "sick to his stomach" about what happened during the Bruins' 5-2 victory.

Scott received a match penalty for illegal check to the head and then a five-minute fighting major resulting from an exchange with Boston's Adam McQuaid.
