Browns waive backup QB Hanie

The Cleveland Browns waived backup quarterback Caleb Hanie and signed running back Edwin Baker off the practice squad of the Houston Texans, the team announced Tuesday.

The moves indicate that the Browns probably expect running back Willis McGahee to miss time with a concussion he suffered Sunday in a loss to the New England Patriots and quarterback Brandon Weeden to return from a concussion he suffered Dec. 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Hanie, a sixth-year veteran whom the Browns signed a week ago, served as starting quarterback Jason Campbell's backup this past weekend with Weeden sidelined.

Baker is 5-foot-8, 210 pounds and officially in his first NFL season out of Michigan State. Originally a seventh-round draft choice by San Diego in 2012, he spent the first 15 weeks of his rookie season on the Chargers' practice squad before being inactive the final two games. This year, he spent the first 11 weeks of the season on the Denver Broncos' practice squad and the past three on the Texans' practice squad.

The Browns also re-signed linebacker Justin Staples to the practice squad and released linebacker Jonathan Stewart from the practice squad.
