Browns' defense surging down the stretch

Browns' defense surging down the stretch

In the past five games, the Browns have won twice, but they were knocking on the door in losses vs. Baltimore and at Indianapolis and Dallas. One reason why Cleveland has put together such a competitive stretch: its defense has stepped up its play in a major way, with an eight-takeaway performance in Sunday's win at Pittsburgh especially impressive.

Overall, opponents have averaged just 286.0 yards in Cleveland’s last five games. It’s not as if the Browns’ defense has been full strength throughout these five games, either. DTs Phil Taylor and Ahtyba Rubin have each missed multiple games in this stretch, and CB Joe Haden — perhaps the most important player on defense — missed the Week 11 loss at Dallas.

The defense struggled early in the season, and especially in a four-game stretch without Haden (suspension) in September and October. Of late, though, it has been an asset, not a liability, much like a season ago, when the Browns finished fifth in points and 10thin yards allowed. The defense’s progress reflects well on coordinator Dick Jauron. This is a young group, with 17 players having three years or less of service, but it is getting better.

  • 2016 NFL Preview: Vikings hope to get Adrian Peterson to a Super Bowl

Shutdown Corner is previewing all 32 teams as we get ready for the NFL season, counting down the teams one per day in reverse order of our initial 2016 power rankings. There are probably two categories of Minnesota Vikings fans: Ones who have convinced themselves that Adrian Peterson is a superhero and will be a Hall of Fame running back forever, and the ones who worry if the rest of the Vikings will peak when Peterson is still in his prime. Back then Peterson was destined to be the NFL’s Ernie Banks and never play for a championship, at least for Minnesota.

UFC president Dana White, in a recent interview with TMZ Sports, said that if B.J. Penn could go back and do it over again that the UFC Hall of Fame member would “do things differently if he could.” White's comments were in response to being asked about fighters that didn't live up to their potential. “It’s flattering and it makes you sad at the same time,” Penn said about White's comments. “Maybe Dana White will look back and be like, ‘You know what?

  • Aroldis Chapman electrifies Wrigley Field in Cubs debut

If you were curious what type of reaction Aroldis Chapman would receive upon his debut at Wrigley Field, wonder no more. The hard-throwing left-hander had won over Cubs fans even before taking the mound in the ninth inning. By the time he struck out Avisail Garcia to wrap up a perfect inning and a Cubs 8-1 win over the White Sox, he’d whipped them into a frenzy.

  • This video of Lionel Messi in training is just glorious (Luis Suárez nutmeg included)

Lionel Messi is awesome. Not only did he cut his vacation short so he could rejoin the Barcelona squad a week earlier to train with his teammates in England and play every friendly match in preseason, he is also using the training sessions  to show just how amazing he is. These are just 140 seconds of greatness. Messi is laughing in the Rondos as he makes his teammates look like fools, he's dribbling Mathieu like he's not even there, and he's even nutmegging his good friend Luis Suárez just because why not. He's also scoring goals on little posts, because every goalpost is big enough for Messi. Just wish Messi was not blonde. But hey, you can't always get what you want. Still, Messi, you're awesome.

  • Report: If Durant/Curry relationship goes south, teams will try to poach Stephen Curry. Well, duh.

There are a handful of true game-changing players in the NBA. Not max players, there are a chunk of those, we’re talking “you can build a contender around him” guys. Kevin Durant is one, and he is headed to Golden State. Stephen Curry is another. And he is a free agent next summer. So many teams — including one contender — are ready if the Durant/Curry relationship goes south, reports Ric Bucher of Bleacher Report. Well, duh. Again, there are not many Curry level players; teams should have a “what if” plan. Including contenders. That is very different than saying Curry is going to leave the Warriors — nobody around the league sees that as likely. Nobody expects a “poisonous” Durant/Curry relationship.

  • Brock Lesnar WWE Wellness Policy Exemption Considered Unfair ‘Double Standard’ Backstage

When news first broke that Brock Lesnar would not be suspended by WWE for failing two UFC drug tests, superstars backstage were pretty upset. But now that the word has gotten out that Brock is completely exempt from the policy altogether, the feelings in the locker room have reportedly flowered into outrage over the double standard of the Wellness Policy. According to Dave Meltzer in the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer newsletter, when the locker room learned that Lesnar has never been tested at any time under the Wellness Policy, performers declared this to be an unfair double standard due in large part to the nature of part-timers’ contracts already: While no performer in WWE is likely

We are very honored that he made the commitment to come to South Florida and sign with us. Dion is young, athletic and explosive, which fits in with our roster. He will add a great dimension for us at the off-guard spot. • 2016 BIG TEN POWER RANKINGS: I have Ohio State 3rd, and I regret it already

At the end of each conference run-through, I take a look at how I perceive the conference's balance of power heading into the season. This is in no way based on schedules, so they are not predictions. This is just how I would rank the teams after writing thousands of words about each of them. When I finished all of the Group of Five conferences, I compiled a full mid-major power rankings list. Now we're into the power conferences; here's the ACC, and here's the Pac-12. Each team's name below links to its full preview. Tier 1 1. Michigan 2. Michigan State 3. Ohio State I've gone back and forth on this constantly. As you see below, all three of these teams have low numbers in returning production.

  • Video: Matt Cain launches a three-run home run

Madison Bumgarner isn’t the only Giants pitcher who can rake. Matt Cain crushed a three-run home run during Tuesday’s game against the Giants. Cain stepped to the plate with runners on the corner and one out against Reds starter Cody Reed in the bottom of the second inning. Reed threw a 1-1 fastball down the middle and Cain hit it about 20 rows back in the left field seats. It’s Cain’s first homer of the season, his first since 2012, and the seventh of his 12-year career. He still has some work to catch up to Bumgarner, who has two homers this year and 13 in his career. On the pitching side of things, Cain got the win against the Reds on Tuesday night, giving up four runs on six hits and a walk

  • Bill Belichick leaves no doubt: Tom Brady will be Patriots' starter after suspension

Tom Brady announced almost two weeks ago that he was giving up his fight, and would end pursuit of exoneration in Deflate-gate: The Saga, meaning he’d be suspended for the first four games of this season. Which means the New England Patriots know that third-year backup Jimmy Garoppolo will be starting those games, and he must get more first-team reps during training camp than he normally does. Garoppolo, a second-round pick out of Eastern Illinois who has just 31 attempts in his first two seasons, will be at the helm for a not-too-easy quartet of games to open the season: at Arizona, then home against the Miami Dolphins, Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills.
