Browns will be cautious with Weeden

The SportsXchange

Pat Shurmur would not guess, but it appears likely Brandon Weeden will be cleared to play when the Browns travel to Oakland to play the Raiders.

Weeden left the Browns' win over Pittsburgh on Sunday after he was spun to the ground and his head hit the knee of Cleveland tackle Joe Thomas with 5:20 left.

Colt McCoy finished the game, but Shurmur said Weeden was responsive and communicative after the game.

"There is a very strict protocol when it comes to concussions," Shurmur said Monday. "We'll go through the process and we'll know more."

The Browns will be ultra careful with Weeden given the controversy that surrounded the way they handled McCoy's concussion against Pittsburgh last season. For that reason, all Shurmur would say was Weeden was in the building and was "fine."

"We've got to go through the process,"Shurmur said. "I'm not making any predictions at this point."

If Weeden is cleared, he will practice, and if he practices he will play in Oakland. Though nothing was definite early in the week, signs were encouraging that he would be able to practice.
